In Yadkin County 10 percent of the population is comprised of individuals with Hispanic or Latino origin, according to the latest Census data.
This statistic shows the growing need for translation and interpretation services in the county.
New local business AZ Multi-Solutions, LLC is hoping to fill that need. Business owner Angelica Hernandez-Blakely opened her business in Yadkinville. Hernandez-Blakely has more than 10 years of experience in the field and decided that Yadkin County would be best served by her services.
“Growing up I would always interpret for my parents,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “I went to all their appointments and translated their mail. I never thought that I was providing a service for them.”
Hernandez-Blakely said that she started work in banking and stayed there for a couple of years before she decided to pursue a career in interpreting. She began professionally interpreting in 2005.
“In 2005 I started working with a company that translated at the courthouses in Surry and Yadkin Counties and they needed someone full-time at Yadkin County Courthouse,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “I worked there for about a year and I left and moved to Charlotte where I worked in insurance, taxes and translation.”
After a while Hernandez-Blakely decided that she should go into business for herself and moved back to her hometown of Dobson in Surry County. Translation and interpretation services were already available in her hometown so Hernandez-Blakely decided to venture out and find the need somewhere else. She wound up back in Yadkin County.
“I am familiar with Yadkin and it is close to home,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “I figured this would be the best place for me to start and then venture out once I get stabilized.”
At AZ Multi-Solutions, LLC Hernandez-Blakely offers professional interpretation, tax services, insurance, notary public and 24/7 interpreting for law enforcement over the phone or on-site.
“I have gone around to a few of the businesses and I have had positive feedback from business owners and people that I have met around the area,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “I’ve heard that Yadkin needs someone who offers bilingual services and that I should do really well here. The positive feedback keeps me motivated and I hope that it is a successful business.”
Hernandez-Blakely said her goal is continue to grow her business and be able to run it full-time one day. She currently works in her office Tuesday through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and holds a part-time job at a hotel in the evenings.
Hernandez-Blakely said that she would like to expand her business to other communities, expand the services she is able to offer, continue her education to stay ahead in her field.
“I want to run a successful and ethical business,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “I want to offer services that are needed the most. There is always something new to learn and offer to the public.”
Hernandez-Blakely said that while it has been difficult to open a new business in a struggling economy she knows that she is doing the right thing. She notes that she feels lucky to have been raised bilingual.
“It is a gift to be able to know at least two languages,” Hernandez-Blakely said. “Every time I question myself about keeping my business open, someone always calls or comes by that needs my assistance. I know there is a need for the services that I offer and this keeps me going. I take pleasure in doing what I do. I welcome everyone to stop in.”
