EAST BEND - With the postseason looming, Forbush battled to a crucial confidence-building 2-2 draw with conference leader Ashe County Monday night in West Jefferson.
In a showdown between the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked 2A teams in the state, Ashe (19-1-1, 12-0-1) came into the matchup riding an 18-game winning streak, which included a 4-3 victory over the Falcons in September.
Forbush at 15-1-2 and 11-1-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference, looked to challenge for the conference title, but will likely have to settle for the second overall seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Both sides return to action in their respective season finales Thursday night as the Falcons battle 1A champion Elkin in East Bend, while Ashe takes on bottom-dweller East Wilkes in Ronda.
Barring an unexpected upset from the Cardinals, the Huskies will capture the conference title.
From one Forbush team preparing for the postseason to another squad beginning their playoff road, the Lady Falcons topped Randleman 3-1 Saturday afternoon in their first-round match.
Forbush advance to take on Northwest Conference champion North Surry Tuesday night in Mount Airy. The Hounds sit at 28-2 on the year and beat the Falcons twice during the regular season.
Down the road in Boonville, Starmount began its quest through the bracket with a opening-round sweep over East Davidson Saturday.
The Lady Rams return to the court Tuesday against Pac-6 Conference champion Wheatmore.
