EAST BEND - Led by a core group of veterans, the Falcons are off to a fast start.
After dropping a 7-0 decision to West Forsyth in the season opener, Forbush has picked up two Mountain Valley Conference victories in three tries, including a 12-3 drubbing of North Wilkes Friday night in Hays.
Mason Doub powered the Falcons past North with five solid innings on the mound. The junior allowed three runs (all unearned), while scattering four hits and striking out six.
Offensively, Forbush pounded out 16 hits on the night, led by a 4-for-5 day at the plate by Ben Temple. The senior added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Barrett Hennings tacked on three hits in five at-bats with three runs scored and two RBIs as eight different Falcons crossed home plate on the night.
Forbush jumped on the board first, plating two runs in the top-half of the first on base hits form Temple and Hennings and never looked back.
The Falcons tacked on four more in the third to build a 6-0 advantage.
After North struck back in the third and cut the lead in half at 6-3 on three Falcon miscues in the field, Forbush responded with runs in three-straight frames, including a four-spot in the fifth.
Brad Dzeskewicz worked out of trouble in the sixth before slamming the door in the seventh to preserve the 12-3 win.
The win was a big bounce-back victory from a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to 2A rival Ashe County the night before in East Bend.
A sixth-inning infield single to short gave the Huskies the late lead as Forbush could not answer, dropping the hard-fought decision.
The loss spoiled Temple’s gem on the mound. The senior allowed two unearned runs, while striking out 11 batters over six innings of work.
Forbush only managed five hits on the night, led by a pair of base hits by Carson Fulp. Dzeskewicz plated Nelson Valerio for the Falcons only run of the game in the second.
Forbush, now 2-2 on the year and 2-1 in the conference, returns the field this week with three games. The Falcons travel to Millers Creek Tuesday night to take on 1A power West Wilkes before hosting West Iredell and Davie County Wednesday and Friday in non-conference tilts.
