BOONVILLE - With bitter rival Elkin in town, Starmount turned in three stellar performances Friday night in a Battle of the Bridge triple header.
The Rams cruised to crucial 4-3 and 14-4 victories on the softball and baseball diamonds, respectively, while the soccer squad took the Elks to overtime before falling 4-3.
Allie Jones played hero for the Lady Rams in the first game of the triple header.
Jones ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to power Starmount to the thrilling 4-3 victory in dramatic fashion.
The Rams battled back from two one-run deficits to set up Jones’ heroics.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Christy Reavis roped a two-run double into the left-center gap in the third as Starmount pulled ahead 2-1.
Elkin struck back and knotted the game in the fifth as Cayley Shoemaker came home to score on a fielding error.
After both teams failed to score in the seventh, the Elks and Rams pushed across runs in the eighth as the game moved to the 10th.
Starmount loaded the bases in the home-half of the 10th before Jones turned on a Shoemaker offering and smacked it into left for the game-winning base hit.
Olivia Greene picked up the win, out-dueling Shoemaker with 10 strong innings in the circle, striking out seven.
Starmount continued its recent surge up the Mountain Valley Conference standings with its fifth straight league win after knocking off Elkin Friday.
The Rams reeled off 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the 14-4 mercy-rule victory.
After falling behind 4-3 in the fifth, Starmount’s bats came to life. The Rams scorched Elkin for nine runs in the frame, highlighted by a bases-clearing double my Tanner Mathis.
Looking for the mercy-rule win, Starmount used back-to-back safety squeezes to finish off the 10-run victory
With the triumph, the Rams moved ahead of Elkin in the conference standings.
Starmount nearly completed the sweep on the soccer pitch, led by captain Francisca Garcia.
After falling behind 3-1 at the half, the Lady Rams turned up the pressure on Elkin in the second half. Starmount kept the Elks scoreless in the half as Garcia found the back of the net twice in a four-minute span to bring the Rams even at 3-3 and sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Makayle Dimmette fired home the game-winner in the second period to give Elkin the thrilling 4-3 victory.
