Yadkin Quilt Trail highlights buildings around the county

August 2, 2013

Jonesville Town Manager Scott Buffkin told the Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce July 23 that several people had visited the Jonesville Welcome Center and asked about the barn quilts.

The art is showing up all around the county, but some here in Yadkin still have not seen the new attraction to the highways and byways.

They’re called barn quilts, and they have been popping up around Yadkin County as part of an effort to create a “trail” of quilts across the area. They show up on barns and buildings, but there are never two exactly alike.

The Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce, Yadkin Arts Council and the Tourism Development Authorities of Yadkinville and Yadkin County all help fund the project.

Interested residents apply for a quilt trail membership and then design their own quilt. Each quilt is unique and makes the trail a destination for people to drive through the county looking for new entries.

Those interested can either draw up their own design or the chamber will provide the contact information of people who will make the quilt for you from a pattern of your choice.

Each barn or building will be an individual. No duplication of patterns will take place around the trail.

Quilts are available in four feet or two feet square blocks.

Part of the proceeds from the quilts and trail fees will go toward printing maps and brochures of the trail.

A map of the current 28 barn quilts can be found at the Yadkin Arts Council office, the Tourism Development Authority, and the Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce.

If you already have a quilt on your property and it meets the trail requirements you can pay a one-time fee of $25 to join. Certain trail restrictions apply.
