Unregistered sex offender arrested following drug discovery

John Joseph Kirtio, 34, of Yadkinville was arrested after Yadkin County Sheriff’s deputies conducted an investigation of Kirtio’s residence on Jr. Key Drive, according to a sheriff’s office release.

Deputies uncovered several drug paraphernalia items in the home, leading them to check the man’s identification.

Deputies found Kirtio to be a registered sex offender in the state of New York, but he had not filed as an offender in Yadkin County despite living there for two weeks, according to the release.

North Carolina law requires sex offenders from other states to register with their local sheriff’soOffice within three days of establishing residence in the state.

He told deputies he was planning to register the next day, the release said.

Kirtio’s charges were felony failure to register as a sex offender and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was placed under a $15,000 secured bond and has a court date of Aug. 28, 2013 in Yadkin County.
