Anthony Gonzalez Staff Report

Yadkin County Board of Election officials disclosed that voters of four towns can vote this year through its early voting and absentee ballot by mail process, but the ballots will only contain information on a countywide sales tax referendum.
The towns are: Boonville, East Bend, Jonesville, and Yadkinville.
“Voters of the towns must physically show up at the polling precinct to vote for town candidates and town referendums,” confirmed director Janet Choplin of the Yadkin County Board of Elections. “For example, Jonesville residents have to show up at the polls to vote on its alcohol referendum and its local elections. You can’t vote for that issue here or any of their candidates.”
Choplin said the collection of town absentee ballots and referrendum matters was deemed cost prohibitive.
Choplin stated that a spreadsheet would be provided to the local precincts helping to identify voters who voted by absentee ballot or early voting, but who show up at the polls.
Scott Buffkin, the town manager of Jonesville said that he was concerned about people who were not able to get to the polls and vote.
“Some people are homebound like the sick and the elderly,” he said.
The written requests for absentee ballots will begin on Friday, October 4, 2013 and continue through October 29, 2013. The “One-Stop” absentee voting will begin on Thursday, October 17, 2013 and end on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 1 p.m.
Yadkin County will have a countywide referendum on Sales and Use Tax on the November 5, 2013 ballot. The referendum proposes to raise the sales tax to 7.00 percent from 6.75 percent. If ushered in successfully, Yadkin County would join 23 other counties currently at 7.00 percent. Four counties have a higher than 7.00 percent sales tax. There would be 72 counties in North Carolina charging less than 7.00 percent. There are 100 counties in North Carolina.
Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
