Yadkinville’s latest disc golf tournament saw players from across the country visit the area.
The annual Yadkin Open was held in the Yadkin County Park Sept. 14. Todd Gillihan, the tournament director, said the tournament was becoming an important event on the Yadkin calendar.
“Locally, disc golf started at Yadkin County Park in 1991 and has grown and evolved to be a popular part of the Park,” Gillihan said. “This was the 15th Yadkin Open to be held at the Park.”
Disc golf has been around formally since the 1970’s and employs many of the basics of golf.
Rather than playing with a club and golf ball the player throws a disc or Frisbee® into a metal basket, or some other form of target.
Just like in golf the winner is the one who hits the target with the fewest number of attempts.
The Yadkin course is laid out across the park with 18 baskets. Each hole has a 12 foot by 5 foot concrete tee pad for players to stand on. Signs at each tee tell the distance to the hole for each location, much like in regular golf.
A red arrow is located at the bottom of each basket, pointing the player to the next tee location.
Benches are also located at each tee for those who wish to take a break during play.
Yadkin County Parks and Recreation Department workers tend the course.
Two rounds determined the winner in the Open.
Round one was 18 holes on the regular course. Round two was 18 holes on a Par 60 version of the regular course.
Players traveled from far and wide to play in Yadkin’s park. The event was open to both professional and amateur players, with seven different classes participating:
The winner of the open division, and current Masters World Champion, was Barry Schultz. He won $175 for the first place score of 96 between the two rounds.
A first place trophy was awarded for all divisions with three or more players in it. All amateur players received a Yadkin Open golf disc when the registered.
The top 50 percent of all divisions also received prizes.
