EAST BEND — Before opening their first-ever Western Piedmont Conference slate, both Falcon hoops squads will open the 2013-14 season against two familiar foes.
Forbush tips off the season Friday night against bitter county rival Starmount in East Bend in what is now a non-conference showdown before heading to Elkin next Tuesday night.
The Falcon boys, who missed the Mountain Valley Conference tournament last year after posting a disappointing 5-11 league mark (5-16 overall), will look to rebound in Head Coach Jeff Weisner’s third year at the helm.
Leading Forbush into the year are returning All-MVAC honorable mentions Barrett Hennings and Bryson Lee, along with senior sharpshooter Mason Doub.
As for the Lady Falcons, they are looking to carry the momentum of a conference tournament semifinals appearance into the year under Bradley Shore.
Forbush, which finished 9-15 overall and 8-8 in league play, gave runaway conference champ North Wilkes all they could handle in the semis in February before eventually falling 62-56.
Powering the Lady Falcons into the season will be do-everything point guard Brittany Moose, an all-conference performer last season, and reigning honorable mentions Maddi Morsch and Paris Trivette.
Freshman phenoms Calyn Davis and Sidney Matthews lead a strong crop of middle school and junior varsity players into the varsity ranks. Davis and Matthews powered the Falcons to back-to-back perfect seasons in middle school, averaging 16.0 and 9.8 points per game, respectively, a year ago.
Both Falcon squads open the season with eight tilts against former conference opponents (Starmount, Elkin, East Wilkes, Wilkes Central, West Wilkes) before kicking off WPAC action against South Stokes on Jan. 3 in Walnut Cove.
Forbush also will hit the floor in two holiday tournaments — next week at East Surry for a Thanksgiving tournament, while the boys will play in the Ashe County Christmas tournament with the girls heading to Galax, Va., for a Christmas tournament.
