Sophia Luper, fourth-grader at Fall Creek, won the annual East Bend Small Town Christmas essay contest sponsored by the Senior Community Center.

She competed against fourth-graders in all the elementary schools in Yadkin County and won a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card.

She will also be a part of the Small Town Christmas Celebration at the East Bend Fire Station on Nov. 30.

Following is her essay.

Why Christmas?

We have Christmas because we celebrate with our families. We also celebrate because it is the Holy Spirit’s birthday. It’s not always about getting presents. You need to give presents instead. You don’t have to spend Christmas with your family at home. Christmas is about spending time with family far away, too. I would rather give than get. I don’t need any presents, I already have so many. I don’t need more. I think Christmas is special to me because you share love with your family members. Even if your family far away can’t come, you still have family at home. I love Christmas because we have family traditions. Sometimes we do stuff together before Christmas time. I don’t always get what I want, but I don’t need it because I have my family. I have my family, so presents don’t matter to me, just family.
