DOBSON — The Surry Community College Lady Knights signed three volleyball players to the upcoming season roster all from area high schools.
Haley Hartman of Starmount High School, Makenzie Dudley of Forbush High School and Sidney Shelton of South Stokes High School signed a letter of intent on Monday at the SCC gymnasium. Parents, grandparents and local coaches were in attendance.
Lady Knights Head Coach Jan Marion-Kiser said she expects the recruits to strongly complement the corp of returners.
All three additions were labeled by Marion-Kiser as “top-notch” hitters. She said they were among the “best of the best” from winning school traditions.
In addition to the players’ athletic skills, Marion-Kiser said another draw was their hard-work ethic and “want to win” mentality.
Starmount volleyball Coach Jon Symons called Hartman the best defensive player he has coached. He called playing locally for the Knights a good opportunity and a way to feed back in to the local high school program.
Forbush volleyball Coach Angie Funk called the signing a dream come true for Dudley and an opportunity to pursue her love of volleyball locally. Dudley’s parents, Jason and Sonya, said, “We are happy she is close to home and gets to do what she loves.”
South Stokes volleyball Coach Doug Balser said Shelton played as a three-year varsity starter at South and is a “tough” competitor.
“I am happy she gets to take it to the next level,” said Balser.
Shelton’s parents, John and Sherrie, said they thought their daughter made a “wise choice.” Grandfather John Rothrock said he was proud of his granddaughter Sidney. He said he is happy that he will be able to watch her play so close by.
SCC 2014 returning volleyball players from the sophomore class are Maddison Hawks, libero; Ashley Smith, defensive setter/middle-hitter; Tiffany Coe, defensive setter; Cassidy Gregory, offensive hitter; and Dana Brown, setter.
