BOONVILLE — Starmount competed in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference wrestling tournament over the weekend and on Tuesday hosted East Surry, Robbinsville and Bishop McGuinness in the Dual Teams State tournament.
Starmount placed sixth in the conference tournament.
Head Coach David Oliver said, “I was pleased with our kids’ performances, it was a good tournament in pretty tough weight classes.”
At the MVAC, Jack McCormick finished third in the 106 weight class and was named Honorable Mention All-conference. Dalton Oliver placed second at 170 pounds and was designated All-conference. Ian Fennell placed first at 183 and was designated All-conference. Finally, Garrett Stokes at 195 clinched a first-place and was All-conference designation.
Four-year-in-a-row state champions West Wilkes won the split 1A/2A MVAC conference tournament.
After Tuesday’s Dual Team competition, the Rams are set to compete in a semi-final round of 1A wrestling on Thursday. Thursday’s winner of West and East rounds will then wrestle on Saturday for the state championship title, said Oliver.
Next week, the Rams will travel to Robbinsville for the 1A western regional tournament with 26 teams in attendance where the top 16 teams will advance to compete.
The top four placers of those competitions will qualify for state tournament held in Greensboro.
Oliver said, “We’ve got a chance to qualify some kids, but it is a tough tournament and tough to qualify and that’s for sure.”
