EAST BEND — Forbush High School junior Robert Cornelius was selected to play for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program soccer team that competed for a National Championship in Phoenix, Ariz. Cornelius was one of 18 players selected from the state of North Carolina selected for this honor.

Cornelius was selected for the 97 Boys ODP Championship Team in mid-February to compete in the championship from Feb. 26 to March 2. The team was slated to play against California South, Iowa and Eastern Pennsylvania.

The North Carolina team finished in third place in the championship with a 3-1 loss to the tournament champion, California South.

For the championship, Cornelius was designated captain of the team just as he is for his soccer team at Forbush High School. Cornelius, a center midfielder, has played at the varsity level for the Forbush Falcons for the past three years. Last year, Cornelius was named to the WPAC All-Conference Team and the Region 10 All-Region team.

Cornelius also plays for the Fusion team out of Greensboro that is coached by Justin Maullin of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
