Goal scorers, leaders in demand at Starmount

BOONVILLE — Replacing Fran Garcia isn’t proving to be so easy.

“We’re still trying to find a leader,” Starmount Coach Jered Markman said. “We lost a strong captain last year. We have some good seniors who have stepped up. They’re trying to fill it, but they’ve got some big shoes to fill.”

Amanda O’Donnell’s play in goal will have a lot to say about Starmount’s success. Markman said the junior keeper “continues to improve” and has “taken more of a leadership role” this season.

The Rams are limited up front number-wise. “We’re still looking for a goal-scorer,” Markman said.

Amber Hurst and Katelyn Coffman each have scored a goal for the Rams this season.

Hurst, Markman said, “is giving it all she can. She does what she can to help everyone on the field.”

A freshman, Claire Maske, may be the answer up front. “She’s played for four years,” Markman said. “She’s trying to be vocal, but she’s also trying to be respectful of the older players.”

Markman said Selena Foster has moved from midfield to sweeper in an effort to fortify the defense. “She’s very much team-minded,” Markman said. “She wanted to whatever she could do to help.”
