Yadkin Arts Council holds auditions for ‘Shrek: The Musical’

Staff Report

Auditions for the Yadkin Arts Council’s youth production of “Shrek: The Musical” will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center. All singers, dancers, and actors ages 5 to 25 (experienced and novice) are urged to come join the fun as the group imagines its way to a land far far away to tell this heart-warming, humorous tale at the Willingham Theater during the first week of June.

The show, like the movie, follows an angry ogre who, in a quest to save his home, finds both friendship and true love in the most unlikely situations. Our gentle hearted hero and a host of unique fairy tale creatures share familiar songs including “I’m a Believer” and “When Words Fail” as they discover together that each of us is blessed with our own kind of beauty.

Hilarious characters including Pinocchio, the three bears, the three blind mice, the gingerbread man, the sugar plum fairy, a wicked witch, seven dwarfs, a love-sick dragon, a big bad wolf, a power-hungry prince, a witty donkey and a chorus line of tap dancing rats are among the “freaks” that Shrek and his princess meet on their journey from the swamps to the castles of Duloc.

The book and lyrics for the show, written by David Lindsay-Abaire, retell this classic fairy tale with humor and unexpected twists. When set to music by Jeanine Tesori, the magical adventure becomes great fun for performers and audience members alike.

The arts council hopes to fill the stage of the Willingham Theater with talented young performers having fun doing quality theater.

The Yadkin Cultural Arts Center is located at 226 E. Main St. in Yadkinville. Saturday’s auditions will be held in the classroom beside the Third Branch Cafe and Sunday’s auditions will be held in the Front Yard located east of the theater building. Watch for the green balloons that mark the audition spaces.
