EAST BEND — A group of young people visited a local farm on Tuesday morning for a unique purpose. The children were choosing vegetables that they would be using as models to create a still-life painting as part of a special art camp hosted by Sharon Grubbs at her home studio in East Bend.“For artists, part of art is experiencing the whole organic nature behind it,” Grubbs explained. Many of her students are from Winston-Salem so part of her goal was also to give the children a peek into life in a rural community.

EAST BEND — Following the death of her husband, one local woman has made it her mission to continue to honor his military service. In addition to photos and memorabilia throughout her home, a few weeks ago, Jean Hunter also completed an outdoor memorial with flags and statuary to honor her husband.“Sometimes my grandchildren tell me ‘why do you want to keep doing this,’” Hunter said. “It’s because I want to keep his memory alive.”

Winners must exhibit academic excellence, involvement in school activities, and be active in community service. Each winner is awarded $1,000 to the school of his/her choice.
