The annual Walk for Hunger to benefit Yadkin Christian Ministries will take place at 3 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the Yadkinville Community Park, located at 609 N. State St. The walk has been an annual fundraiser for many years, but has been done for the past few years in memory of Susan S. Steelman.
“Working with Yadkin Christian Ministries was one of her passions. She really enjoyed that volunteer work,” said Janet Robbins, Steelman’s daughter. Steelman was a seventh-grade teacher at Boonville Elementary School prior to her retirement. She passed away in August of 2012, but her memory lives on in the lives of other Yadkin Christian Ministries volunteers and the annual Walk for Hunger.
“My mom would always say how important the volunteers here are to Yadkin Christian Ministries,” Robbins said.
Registration for the walk will take place from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. at the park. Walkers are asked to donate or pledge money to benefit Yadkin Christian Ministries. During the walk, local group The Enon Boys will perform.
There were 135 walkers with an additional 50 spectators who participated in last year’s walk, raising $14,574 for the ministry.
Yadkin Christian Ministries provides food and funds to pay electric bills for families in need. They assist an average of 125 families each week.
Deep Creek Friends Church and the town of Yadkinville help support the walk.
“It just makes it a wonderful event for people to come and enjoy listening to the music if they don’t want to walk or just to come and walk and support the ministry,” Robbins said.
