Shallow Ford seminar and walk scheduled

The Lewisville Historical Society and the Yadkin County Historical Society will present a seminar and walk to the historic Shallow Ford crossing on the Yadkin River on March 19, 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., beginning and ending at Huntsville Baptist Church, 4901 Courtney-Huntsville Road, Yadkinville.

Local historians will lead discussions on the natural environment of the Shallow Ford, including its formation in the Westward Movement of the United States, and the three military events associated with it. Books and other information will be available.

The group will drive to Williams Road in Forsyth County and walk to the Shallow Ford in Forsyth County. After their return, the group will return to the church for lunch.

After lunch, the group will walk along the Great Wagon Road to the Shallow Ford in Yadkin County. After their return, the group will walk to the site of the Battle of Shallow Ford, Oct. 14, 1780, the graves of Loyalists and the Patriot killed in the battle, and the Big Poplar Tree, which witnessed the battle.

Afterwards, the group will return to the church for a review of the day.

Anyone who is interested is invited to participate, but space is limited to the first 100 participants. The walks are strenuous and participants are encouraged to bring sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. The Lewisville Historical Society, the Yadkin County Historical Society, and the property owners are not responsible for accidents. Access to the personal and posted property is only allowed on this day and the stated time with the group. No individual access is allowed and the lands should not be trespassed on as individuals after the designated time.

Pets and children younger than 12 are not allowed. Childcare will not be provided. Coffee, water and snacks will be provided, but participants need to bring their own lunch and any other necessities.

Advanced registration of $10 is encouraged, but can be paid at the door.
