The Yadkin County Animal Shelter will host a special pet adoption day on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will coincide with the national observance of Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, said Jessica Wall, assistant director of health and human services for Yadkin County.
“Our hope for the event is to clear the shelter,” Wall said. “We’d like to be able, at the end of the day, to have adopted every available animal out.”
Wall said they also hope to make Adopt a Shelter Pet Day an annual event at the Yadkin County shelter. For the event, the regular fees of $100 for dogs and $85 for cats will be lowered to $20 for dogs and $10 for cats. The fee includes the regular vetting for the animal.
Shelter Manager Jason Roels said he was especially pleased the county commissioners approved the request to offer the lowered adoption rates for the event. He said that was the lowest the fee had ever been and it will be a great opportunity for those looking for a new pet.
Also at the event, $10 one-year rabies vaccinations will be offered.
Animal shelter volunteers will be at the event as well as local pet-related vendors.
Finding good homes for the animals and offering rabies vaccines to care for other animals is always the goal at the shelter, Wall said. She said the event also will be a good opportunity to connect with the community.
“We want to have a good relationship with the community,” she said. “We’d like to have the community come in and volunteer and feel like it’s something they can support.”
“We have a really great group of volunteers that come on a regular basis,” Wall added.
