A North Carolina man died at the scene of a tractor-trailer accident on Sunday on Interstate 77 in Carroll County.
According to Virginia State Police reports, the accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. on April 24 at the 18 mile-marker on Interstate 77 North. Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser said Bruce William Moody, 67, of Statesville, N.C. was operating a 1995 International tractor-trailer owned by Gregory Trucking of Union Grove, N.C. that was loaded with lumber.
“There were some witnesses that saw the truck go from the right lane all the way across the road and into the median, where it struck a pine tree and lost its entire load of lumber,” Musser said. “The truck hit a pine tree and the tractor-trailer and the entire load went into the trees.”
The 67-year-old driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Musser said Moody was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is being investigated by Trooper S.M. Phillips. The cause of the accident remains under investigation
One lane of I-77 was blocked for wreckers and ambulances, causing traffic to back up for five to six miles at one point Sunday evening.
