Yadkin County Board of Commissioners Chairman Kevin Austin was congratulated at the commissioners meeting on Monday evening for being elected to serve in a leadership role in the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. County Manager Lisa Hughes, Commissioners David Moxley, Frank Zachary and Austin attended the NCACC convention last weekend in Winston-Salem.
“They had a good conference this past week,” Moxley said. “I went to several good sessions. In one session they divided us up by the size of our county, and everyone of that population group we had the exact same concerns. So we’re not in the boat alone. Everyone has the same needs for jobs and economic development. Maybe we can, as the association statewide, start pulling together and get some things done for these rural counties.”
During board action, the commissioners approved the reclassification of a parks and recreation assistant position to park superintendent. Hughes said as services continue to expand at the Yadkin Memorial Park, the role needs to be more comprehensive. The position will be advertised soon.
The board also approved a bid from Northwestern Emergency Vehicles to purchase two new ambulances for the county at a total cost of $300,686. The cost includes protective grilles for the front of the vehicles. After some discussion of past damage to an ambulance that did not have a grille on the front, the board agreed to have those installed on the new ambulances.
A contract and budget amendment for HVAC services at the hospital with Brady Trane also was approved.
The board will hold a joint meeting with the Yadkin County Board of Education on Aug. 29 at the Yadkin County Agriculture and Educational Building. A commemorative event is slated for Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Yadkin County Park Amphitheater.
