Construction is expected to begin next month to replace the bridge on Old Stage Road in Yadkinville. The bridge has been closed for several months now and residents in the area said it has caused travel delays and confusion for folks looking for local businesses located beyond the bridge.
Joe Laws, bridge program manager with North Carolina Department of Transportation, said the project was initially slated for 2018, but for the safety of travelers, the bridge was closed much sooner.
“We had to close that bridge unexpectedly back in June for some safety issues,” Laws said. “We had it programmed to begin in 2018 so we accelerated that.”
Laws said a consultant was on board to redesign the bridge and the plans have been completed. The utilities relocation is expected to begin shortly, Laws said, and demolition of the existing bridge is scheduled to begin on or around Dec. 15. Laws said construction is expected to last between five and sixth months for the project.
