The Yadkin group of North Carolina Farm Bureau has announced it will be offering scholarships for agricultural students.
“I am pleased that Yadkin County Farm Bureau and North Carolina Farm Bureau, once again, are offering these scholarships to deserving students in Yadkin County who wish to pursue a career in agriculture, in some form or fashion,” said Justin Somers, president of Yadkin County Farm Bureau. “This organizations commitment to farmers, agriculture, rural communities and our future are evident by the offerings these great scholarship programs.”
Farm Bureau firmly believes assisting the industry’s future leaders in obtaining higher education is an investment in the future, and is an integral part of fulfilling the Farm Bureau mission.
2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of North Carolina Farm Bureau’s R. Flake Shaw Scholarship program, it has awarded $3,000,000 to students across NC wishing to pursue a degree in agriculture or ag related field. The Shaw Scholarship awards six students $4,000 per year for four years ($16,000 per student) for the university scholarship and two students $1,000 per year for two years ($2,000 per student) for the community college scholarship. Since 2005, Yadkin County Farm Bureau has been awarding its own scholarship to further assist students here in Yadkin County interested in agriculture. The Yadkin County Farm Bureau Scholarship is awarded to two students each year, one resident in each of the county’s high school districts, in the amount of $1,000 per year for up to four years ($4,000 per student). This amount is awarded to students going to community colleges, universities and participating in transfer programs.
For additional information, students and parents are encouraged to talk to the high school guidance counselors or high school agriculture sciences teachers. Individuals can also stop by any Farm Bureau office in Yadkinville, Jonesville and East Bend to pick up an application or log on to: http://www.ncfb.org/Programs/R-Flake-Shaw-Scholarship to print applications and learn more about the program. Students only need to fill out the R. Flake Shaw Scholarship application (University and/or Community College). Filling out the Shaw Scholarship application also will apply the student for the Yadkin County Farm Bureau Scholarship. Deadline to apply is March 3.
