YADKINVILLE — Organizers are asking area residents to clean out their closets and plan to pack up their car trunks for an easy-does-it, back-to-school “Junk in the Trunk” sale from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 23 in the parking lot of Baity Tire Service in Yadkinville.
The event is sponsored by Champions for Children, a newly formed nonprofit advocating for abused and neglected children going through the court foster system in the community.
The public is invited to come park a car, SUV, family van, or pick-up truck (no panel trucks) to sell out of the trunk for a $10 per-vehicle parking fee. About 30 to 40 vehicles will be allowed in on a first-come, first-parked basis. The $10 fee is cash only and is paid as cars park. Baity Tire Service, located at 240 Sharon Drive in Yadkinville, has donated the use of its parking lot to benefit Champions for Children.
Vendors will be allowed to enter only from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. on Aug. 23. For safety reasons, no late entries will be allowed. Vendors can set up in space the width of their vehicle to display merchandise.
There will be no charge for buyers to enter the sale site. Free parking for buyers will be on the opposite side of the site and shoppers will walk through the vendor area. No buyers will be allowed to enter before 8 a.m.
“We think it’s going to be a lot of fun for both the buyers and sellers, and the vendor fee proceeds will support a good cause,” said Julie Broyhill, president of Champions for Children. The organization has begun as a nonprofit supporting the Guardian ad Litem program for Judicial District 23 (Alleghany, Ashe, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.)
“Many of us are currently serving as volunteer Guardians ad Litem and we see many areas of need that a non-profit organization can help fulfill,” she said. “Plus we want to increase public awareness of Guardian ad Litem because we need more volunteers looking out for the children.”
Guardian ad Litem volunteer advocates are appointed from the community by the court to focus strictly on the best interest of children who have been abused or neglected and are now in foster care. Currently there are 298 foster children in District 23. Of that number, 82 children do not have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem speaking for them in court. Champions for Children is dedicated to the recruitment, retention and continued education of future Guardian ad Litem volunteers. All donations will go to support our efforts in making sure that every child in the foster care system has a voice of his or her own in court.
