YADKINVILLE — North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Yadkin County Center, completed the first Extension Master Gardener Volunteer class held in the county last month. A cookout has been planned for July to officially celebrate the volunteers’ graduation.

Graduates of the 2014 Yadkin County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer class are Sandra Grant, Catherine Morrison, Sam Williams, and Hedy Wooten. Debra Edwards transferred as a Master Gardener volunteer from Alamance County and completed the training as well.

Colleen Church, County Extension director and Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program coordinator, said, “It has been a great pleasure getting to know this class. They are very knowledgeable, have been a lot of fun and are eager to begin the volunteer component. I really look forward to working with them and thank them for helping to get this program off the ground in Yadkin County.”

The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program is a national volunteer program offered by Cooperative Extension Service’s across the nation. In exchange for horticulture training, the volunteers agree to serve as resource individuals for their local Cooperative Extension Center to extend the outreach efforts of the home horticulture program. The program curriculum was developed at North Carolina State University, the parent organization for the North Carolina Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program and Yadkin County Cooperative Extension.

For more information on the Yadkin County Master Gardener Volunteer program, contact Colleen Church at 679-2061. Applications are being accepted for the spring class of 2015. Classes will meet on Wednesday mornings, and a fee is charged to cover program materials.
