Organizers for a local charity are launching a fundraiser they say is needed to help purchase sports equipment to run a free agility camp.

Registration for the agility camp is open to all children and adults.

According to I Support My Community of Elkin, a cookout will be held on May 3 on the corner of North Bridge Street and N.C. 268 Bypass from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cookout will contain items such as tenderloin, hamburgers, hot dogs, and other food.

Cookout tickets are being sold for $5 per plate.

All proceeds will help offset equipment purchases for a second annual agility camp to commence on June 9. The equipment needed by the organization has been posted on its Facebook page. Some items are an agility quick ladder, recreation belts, speed hurdles, a hop trainer, speed chutes and medicine balls.

“We’re trying to raise over $2,000 to cover the items. The agility camp will be held at the Elkin Recreation Center,” said Ferando “Sly” Best.

Best is also the proprietor of Midtown Barber in downtown Elkin.

“This is the second year of the agility camp. We want it to be for free. A lot of kids and families can’t afford expensive programs…We’re doing what we can do as a community to fight obesity,” said Best. “It also keeps the kids safe. If I can keep the kids involved and focused, they’re not off doing other things.”

According to Best, registration for the camp is gaining traction with more than 60 registration forms submitted.

“That’s already over the number we had last year,” said Best.

Registration forms are available at the Elkin Recreation Center or the organization’s Facebook page.

Free agility training workouts are planned for twice to three times per week.

Last August, I Support My Community blitzed Elkin and surrounding areas providing free book bags and school supplies for more than 125 children. The same organization provided Christmas gifts for children of families struggling through the holiday season.

Those who would like to donate to the organization should call Best at 336-526-0035.
