Yadkinville Police arrested a Hamptonville man July 14 after he allegedly left his three small children unattended in a car outside the Yadkin County Courthouse.

Deputies were first alerted by a child who approached them inside the courthouse and said they were waiting for their dad in the car and it was too hot, according to a news release from the Yadkinville Police Department. A deputy accompanied the child back to the car and found two additional children inside the hot vehicle soaked in sweat.

The children’s father, Brandon Lee Lewis, 34, was located inside the courthouse in a traffic courtroom. Lewis told police that his air conditioner was working earlier that morning.

Yadkinville Police officers charged Lewis with three counts of misdemeanor child abuse and he was placed under a $1,500 secured bond.

The children, ages 10, 9 and 3, did not require medical attention and were turned over to their mother who arrived after being called to the scene. Deputies provided the children water and a cool place to wait inside the courthouse until their mother arrived.
