S and J Motors host community yard sale

YADKINVILLE — S and J Motors’ Steve Clodfelter decided to do something to help his community Friday and Saturday.
Several friends and neighbors had told Clodfelter they were interested in having yard sales to help ease their money troubles but did not have the space to do so.
“The reason I did it was a lot of people are out of work,” Clodfelter said.
Clodfelter owns the large field where an S and J sign stands along U.S. 421 at the Dinkins Bottom Road exit. He decided to open the field to a swap meet and let all of those interested participate free of charge.
“I’ve got a field over there, got as good a view as any,” he said. “I told them to bring it on, anything that’s legal. And that’s what they did.”
The meet started Friday at 7 a.m. and ran until. The hours were the same on Saturday.
Clodfelter said the participation was high from both vendors and visitors.
Those who visited signed in at S and J Motors and then drove along the lines of cars and parts down to the field behind the lots.
At least four dozens vendors signed in and even more came to shop and trade.
Many of the vendors brought homemade crafts they had created while being out of work. Some brought cars; others household items they were looking to get rid of like bicycles and sewing machines.
Clodfelter said one man had sold all of his crafts on Friday and was going home to make more to sell Saturday.
Clodfelter told people to start bringing their goods Thursday evening, but some couldn’t wait that long to get started.
“I told them to start bringing everything Thursday at dinner. Me and my son told them all week long. Not only Thursday, they started bringing it Wednesday at dinner. And this morning at 6:15, they were just lined up,” Clodfelter said.
“It’s just a miracle to see the people who have come in and responded to this thing,” Clodfelter said. “Through that driveway today there’s probably been 400 or 500.”
He plans to hold more swap meets in the future, with the next likely being held next spring.
