Samantha Fowler has worked with the Yadkin Family YMCA for more than six years, but she’s called Yadkin home all of her life.
Fowler was born and raised in Boonville near Starmount High but attended kindergarten through eighth grade at West Yadkin Elementary. She graduated as a Starmount Ram in 2003.
She left the county briefly following graduation but came back four years later.
She attended Wake Forest University for two years. When it came time to declare a major, she decided to leave school and move to Raleigh.
Fowler took some college courses while living in Raleigh but mainly worked. After two years in the capital, she returned home.
She began working at the Y as a part-time employee at the front desk. She was looking for full-time work when the YMCA approached her with a position.
“About six months in, they offered me a full-time position in the membership office,” Fowler said. “I’ve really kind of found my niche at the Y. I never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I have kind of fell into it I guess you could say.”
She now works as the family program coordinator for the Y. She is in charge of the summer day camp, the nursery, teen/youth/adult sports, and family activities.
She said of all the age ranges she works with teens are her favorite.
“It’s kind of how I got into the position,” Fowler said. “When I was in membership, I was in there for five years. Because of my hours, I was here when kids were getting out of school and getting dropped off by the bus. I just kind of starting talking to them and it ended up I started organizing small events here and there.”
She said the teens were easy for her to relate to because she can relate to them. She knows what it’s like to prepare to graduate and move out into the workforce or college.
“For me, I look at it as I want them to have opportunities I didn’t have when I was in high school. The Y wasn’t here until my last year or two in high school,” she said.
Her schedule has her work mainly afternoons when the adults and youth she works with are free. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her two Labrador-beagle mixed dogs, Ringo and Oswald.
She and her sister are avid campers. The two try to go when they have free time, including a big trip each summer.
They have taken a two-week road trip camping their way to South Dakota and Mount Rushmore. Another trip took them to New England for whale watching.
They hope to take another trip out west to the Grand Canyon.
Fowler graduated from Surry Community College in May and plans to attend University of North Carolina at Pembroke online.
