YADKINVILLE — On Saturday at 8 a.m., the Yadkin Family YMCA will hold registration for its third annual free weight loss program, Transformation Nation Triad (TNT). Space is limited to only 100 participants and lines are expected to form early.

The free eight-week program will include Boot Camp style fitness courses as well as nutrition information for a healthy lifestyle. According to YMCA Wellness Director Becky Serine, the program is ideal for beginners ready to kick-start a healthy lifestyle.

“A lot of people are nervous about coming to the Y,” Serine said. “Since TNT is a free program, it really takes that pressure off and allows people to jump right into a fitness routine, complete with emotional support from the trainers. Since this is a group program, there is great team support, also.”

Latisha Wood of Yadkinville is one of the TNT success stories. She was in line at 4 a.m. in January of 2012 to register for the inaugural TNT and is now an instructor for the Body Pump class at the YMCA.

“It was my birthday gift to myself,” Wood said. “And it changed my life. Not only did I lose 24 pounds, but I was able to go off my blood pressure medication and it kept me from being put on diabetes medication.”

Wood, 39, suffers from Congenital Scoliosis and was told by her doctors to avoid exercise and lifting anything heavy. When she continued to put on weight due to lack of exercise, however, her back pain only increased and so she decided to do something about it.

With the help of the trainers in the TNT program, Wood was able to begin an exercise routine that fit her life and helped build her muscle strength to better support her back, which has reduced the chronic pain she suffered from in the past.

Serine explained that the trainers will work to push each participant to reach their goals in a safe manner.

“Each trainer will teach various modifications of the exercises to fit the needs of each person,” she said. “The goal is not really about a number on the scale, it’s about healing yourself in spirit, mind and body”

Participants in the TNT program must be considered obese according to their Body Mass Index (BMI.) The YMCA website offers a calculator that will allow potential participants to determine their BMI at www.ymcanwnc.org/tnt.

Lines are expected to form early in order to register, and Sheetz will be onsite providing coffee for those lining up.
