YADKINVILLE — The Yadkinville community lost one of its active citizens and volunteers last week.
William Eugene “Gene” Branon Sr. was laid to rest on Saturday. Branon served as a town commissioner in Yadkinville for a total of 15 years. He served on the board from 1995 until 2003 and again from 2007 until his death on March 31.
“Commissioner Branon was an exemplary model of public leadership who always held the concerns of the citizens close to his heart at all times whether as a Town Commissioner or a firefighter,” said Christopher Ong, town manager of Yadkinville. “He was a kind, honorable man who was well-liked and respected by the Town Board and employees and throughout the community.”
Branon also served with the Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years. He was also a leader of Boy Scout Troop 655, a baseball coach for the Yadkinville Cardinals and a founding member of Maplewood Baptist Church.
