BOONVILLE — Two Yadkin County residents were charged this week in an animal cruelty case.

On June 4, Donald Clayton Johnson, 60, and Sandra Ross Johnson, 62, both of Boonville, were charged with one count each of felony cruelty to animals. They were previously charged with six counts each of misdemeanor cruelty to animals on June 1.

Deputies from the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office visited the Johnsons in May of this year. At that time, the Johnsons were advised to make some changes specific to the care and maintenance of the horses they had.

Upon the deputies return for a follow-up investigation, it was determined that the Johnsons allegedly had not made any of the directed changes and that the situation had worsened. As a result of this subsequent visit to the property in Boonville, the misdemeanor charges resulted.

On June 4, the sheriff’s office was advised that one of the severely neglected horses had to be euthanized. The death of this animal elevated the animal cruelty to a felony level charge.

The Johnsons were each placed under a $15,000 secured bond.
