YADKINVILLE — Phillip Willard will finally be able to operate his mobile food van after county commissioners approved changing the zoning ordinances on similar businesses.

The vote was 5-0 in favor of changing text in the county’s zoning ordinance that will allow food vendors to sell in commercial areas in the county.

Rural and agricultural areas are not included in the vending areas. Individual towns would have to make similar changes to allow vending in their limits.

Willard is a former restaurant owner looking to get back into the business for extra money, but without the hassle of large staffing.

Willard said he will operate the van and his wife will bake biscuits and cakes at their home.

Yadkin Director of Services and Development Michael Poston presented the issue in a public hearing prior to the board action. With no participants, the board moved on to the actual vote.

Willard commented later that he was happy to finally get to work. His purchased van has been sitting for four months in his yard, waiting for permission to let Willard go ahead with his mobile career.

Willard will run his van down the road from nearby Rag Apple Lassie Winery in the Lightning Cross community. The van will be set up east of Boonville on Highway 67.
