Wilkes man charged in thefts case
YADKINVILLE — A North Wilkesboro man was charged following a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation in Yadkinville Jan. 8 that netted jewelry and other items reportedly stolen.
According to the Yadkinville Police Department, Jan. 8 at about 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in the downtown area. When officers arrived, they observed Joshua Russell McHargue, 20, of Statesville Road, North Wilkesboro, driving away from a local business in an erratic manner and not wearing his seatbelt.
Officers approached the vehicle once it was stopped and spoke to McHargue, the police reported. They then discovered a cache of jewelry worth more than $3,500 and a leaf blower during the investigation.
Detectives determined that the items had been stolen subsequent to multiple burglaries in Wilkes County and McHargue was taken into custody. According to the police department, he was successfully linked by the Yadkinville Police Department to three home burglaries in Wilkes County, where he also has been charged.
Yadkinville authorities charged McHargue with felony possession of stolen property and misdemeanor possession of stolen property, due to separate situations by which the various items originally stolen.
He was placed under a $2,500 secured bond pending a court date on Feb. 26.
