MOORESVILLE — Eight weeks of classroom and hands-on training came together on Feb. 27 as Pit Crew U’s most recent class of graduates performed live pit stops outside the Performance Instruction & Training (PIT) facility in Mooresville.

Among the graduates of the school’s 98th class was Yadkinville native Nathan Williams, 18.

Pit Crew U is a training course for individuals interested in a career in the motorsports industry as an over-the-wall pit crew athlete. In addition to learning pit stop choreography and each of the six positions on a pit crew, students become proficient in race day preparation, equipment maintenance and selection, and pit road rules and regulations.

Williams, a 2013 graduate of Starmount High School in Boonville, was awarded the Starmount High School-Pit Crew U Scholarship upon receiving recommendations from his teachers and coaches. After a strong performance in PIT’s eight-week foundation program, Williams looks to continue working towards becoming one of motorsports’ most elite athletes by joining PIT’s 5 Off 5 On Race Team Performance program. 5 Off 5 On Race Team Performance provides continued career development to prepare students for tryouts and placement with professional teams by building upon the foundation received in Pit Crew U.

“Pit Crew U is a great program; the training that’s provided is fantastic and I’d highly recommend the program to anyone looking for a career in the sport. PIT’s coaches are exceptional as well – they helped me move one step closer towards making my dream of working in NASCAR a reality. I can’t wait to join 5 Off 5 On Race Team Performance and continue my training,” said Williams.

His dedication within the Pit Crew U program and graduation is just the first step.

“The students have been working hard for eight weeks and their time in Pit Crew U is over, but their career is just beginning,” said Bob Plott, PIT’s general manager. “Being invited into 5 Off 5 On is an amazing opportunity for them to continue to advance their skills.”

The 5 Off 5 On program offers participants athletic training, skills coaching and the opportunity to serve as an over-the-wall pit crew athlete in different divisions of stock car racing so students can realize their full potential.

“The newest graduates have a reputation to live up to as Pit Crew U Alumni hold positions with championship winning organizations in all divisions of motorsports,” said PIT Director of Motorsports Adam Merrell.

The most recent graduates join a prestigious group of Pit Crew U Alumni who, in the 2013 race season alone, saw ten win championships in every major level of NASCAR. Sixty-two different Pit Crew U Alumni won 93 of the 96 total races combined in NASCAR’s top three series in 2013 as well.

Besides pit crew training for individuals and teams, PIT provides corporate team building initiatives and Lean Performance programs. For more information about Performance Instruction & Training, visit www.VisitPIT.com.
