JONESVILLE — Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry will hold the first ever “Hungerscapes Sculpture Competition” with deadlines for applications due on Sept. 10.
Executive Director Heather Macy said it is “turning awareness into action by creating art.”
The month of September is Hunger Awareness Month, said Macy.
In the project, all entries must be ready for judging and photographing by 9 a.m on Sept. 29.
In the competition, canned goods and non-perishable items will be used for building things and donated to the ministry after the judging.
There is a entry fee of $25 (amount designated for captain and second team member) and a $10 cost for each group member.
Each team will have a minimum of four members. Others in the group may help with fundraising, collecting/purchasing food or other aspects of the event, but only those on the “build team” must pay entry fee.
Those who pay an entry fee will receive a T-shirt.
Wood materials may be used to compose a frame and other items such as rubber bands, nylon string, wire, Velcro, double-sided tape can be used.
All structures must have a sign identifying the team captain/team sponsor; entry’s title; and may include a logo or recognition of team members.
All foods used must be in date, and should not expire before March 2015 for use in the competition.
Awards will be given for the project. There will be a Peoples Choice (voted on by the community); Junior Builders Award (group award made by youth under 18 years old); Best Meal (using canned items from each food group of meat, vegetable, grain and fruit); Best Use of Labels (use of label color factors into artistic mix); and Most Cans or Packages Used.
Macy said ideas may be found by “googling” canned food sculptures on the web; or on the Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry Facebook page, said Macy.
Macy said they are looking for at least 15 groups to build a structure and will make a map for people to view designs.
A Hungerscape Awards Ceremony will be held on Oct. 3.
She said she hopes the event for hunger awareness will also draw attention to the Jonesville area.
A Hungerscapes 2014 packet may be picked up at Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry located at 440 W. Main St., Jonesville.
