WALNUT COVE — Forbush kicked off Western Piedmont Conference play in style Friday night.

The Falcons pitched a shutout against new league foe South Stokes, blanking the Sauras 10-0 to win both teams’ first-ever contest in the newly-formed conference.

Led by a monstrous performance from senior Cody Shrewsbury — 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack — Forbush’s stingy defense silenced South’s high-powered offense.

The Falcons also picked off Saura signal-caller J.J. Davis four times on the night — two by Tyler Johnson, and one each by Tyler Holden and Brady Willard — in a dominating outing.

Offensively, Forbush racked up 320 yards of total offense, but failed to convert on red-zone opportunities.

Jordan Sawyers turned in his third 100-yard game of the season, tallying 173 yards on 28 carries (4.93 yards per carry), while scoring the game’s only touchdown.

Holden tacked on 86 yards on the ground with a 6.62 yards-per-rush average.

Filling in for injured starter Carson Fulp, freshman Jackson Cooper threw for 50 yards on 4-for-10 passing, while adding 10 yards on the ground.

Forbush returns to the field Friday with its biggest test of the season when 2011 state champion West Stokes heads to East Bend in WPAC action.

The Wildcats started the season 5-1 before dropping their league opener to North Surry in overtime last week, 24-21.
