BOONVILLE —Starmount improved its boys varsity record to 5-2 by defeating rival Elkin 61-45 in Friday’s boys varsity competition in the Mountain Valley 1A conference.

Starmount jumped out to an early lead in a spread-out scoring effort with James Ashley, Gunner Cass and Josh Houser contributing six points a piece and Luke Shore four to open the first half. The Rams also controlled the boards in the opening half of the game.

Kody King contributed five points as Elkin’s only scorer in the first quarter. However, in the second, Jamiles Hayes came alive as the quarter’s lead scorer, recording seven points.

At half time, Elkin had narrowed the gap to five with Starmount leading 27-22.

At the opening of the third, Elkin changed the game’s momentum when Tyrek Hayes found an inside route scoring on a lay-up, Jamiles Hayes scored a long three-point basket and Kody King scored two three-pointers, giving Elkin a 33-31 lead.

Starmount rallied back as the score exchanged leads several times. When the third-quarter closed, Elkin had outscored Starmount by two points, though Starmount had regained the lead 39-36.

Starmount picked up the pressure on Elkin in the fourth by using double coverage on King, though he still scored six. The defense was effective, and Elkin failed to hustle defensively in return after the teams were tied 42-42. Ram’s Ashley took advantage of the opening, scoring ten points in the fourth.

Elkin’s Head Coach Kenneth Abrams said “Bottom line, we got out-hustled, Elkin played 28 minutes and 18 seconds.”
