BOONVILLE — In a rivalry 1A Mountain Valley Conference match-up on Friday, the Elkin High School girls varsity basketball team traveled to Starmount and seized a 66-25 victory.

With the win Elkin improved its conference record to 5-3 and 9-9 overall. The Starmount girls are still on the hunt for their first season win.

Lady ‘Buckin Elks’ Head Coach Derek Carter said the team’s consistency during four quarters paid off. Carter said everyone did their job on defense and the offense played in sync.

“It has been a team that has worked real hard.” Carter said he is happy with the team’s record but added the conference remains “wide open.” There were five teams tied for second in the conference coming into Friday’s game.

Lady Rams Head Coach Mike Dobson described Starmount as young, having four freshman, two sophomores, two juniors and two seniors. As the season has progressed, the team continues to get better at handling pressure and have kept a good attitude through the losses, said Dobson.

“We’ve played every game and I keep preaching it takes time.”

Elkin points were scored by Makayla Dimmette recording 14; Kaitlin Faw 8; Miracle Walters 8; Bethany Turner 2; Kenly Burchette 8; Courney Beals 9; Kylie Thomas 5; Carrie Brown 12.

For Starmount, Asuka Takadate scored 2; Darion Dobson 8; Sabrina Beatriz 6; Kenzie Harris 2; Whitney Pardue 2; and Christy Reavis 5.
