MURFREESBORO — Starmount graduate and Chowan University sophomore Courtney Groce earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) player of the week honors for her pitching performances March 9 and 10.

Groce guided the Hawks to a 9-1 win over St. Augustine’s and 10-2 victory against Fayetteville State.

Chowan Coach Mandi Balduf said Groce “has returned in her sophomore season to take the reins of the pitching staff and become our solid go-to pitcher. Her confidence and stature on the mound is the type of leadership we need right now. She has worked really hard with our pitching coach, Brian DeWitt, over the course of the past two years, and her growth and maturity is evident in her outings.

“Her weekly CIAA honors are just a validation that she is one of the top pitchers in this conference. We are looking for her to carry us through this final stretch and right into CIAA conference tournament.”

The Hawks began the season 0-15, but have won 10 of 17 recently to bring their record to 10-22.
