BOONVILLE —Rebekah Cranford drove in three runs and Cayley Shoemaker scored three runs and drove in another as Elkin pulled away from Starmount late for an 11-2 victory.
The Lady Elks plated two runs without a hit in the first inning. Shoemaker walked and Kirstan Beaver was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Both were pushed around the bases by Cranford, Bethany Turner, and an errors.
Elkin scored two more in the fifth as Shoemaker again reached base on a walk and scored on a double by Cranford. Cranford subsequently scored on a single by Turner.
Starmount cut it to 4-2 in their half of the fifth. Amber Fernando walked and then moved to third on a double by Christy Reavis. Ashley Johnson then singled to score them both.
The Lady Elks scored seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning highlighted by Turner’s two-run double.
The Rams committed four errors. “We did have a few errors,” Starmount Coach Sarah Boles said. “And we had errors with runners on base. When a ball’s hit, you got to take care of it.
“If you make errors it always comes back to you.”
Shoemaker threw a complete game for Elkin, allowing five hits, walking five, and striking out five. Both Starmount runs were earned.
“Cayley did a great job pitching,” Boles said. “She kept our hitters off balance. We had some good hits, but we weren’t consistent throughout the game. Against a good team like that, you got to hit every inning.”
Elkin hosts Wilkes Central Tuesday.
The Rams are at Alleghany Tuesday and at home to Forbush Wednesday. The Forbush game is varsity only and will begin at 5.
