RONDA — Track and field returned to East Wilkes High School as five teams competed on a sun-splashed day.

“It was pretty cool,” said East Wilkes distance runner and senior Will Jolly. “It’s the first time in a while.

“We practice here, so it’s cool running on this.”

It had been more than 20 years since East Wilkes hosted a track and field meet. At the end of the 2013 season, the regulation track was complete.

East Wilkes Athletic Director Justin Call said said it was great to host a track and field meet again. “It made sure those seniors had a chance to experience having a meet at home,” he said.

East Wilkes Coach J.K. Atkins, who did the starting, said, “I thought it went well. Everybody did a good job pitching in to make it run smooth.”

Forbush Coach Mark Beuter said, “It was well run. It went right through the events.”

“They’ve done a good job,” Elkin Coach Scott Woods said. “Coach Atkins did a good job starting.”

Samantha Welborn captured the discus, the shotput and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay for the Starmount women. Josh Houser captured the shot put and the discus on the men’s side.

Several Rams competed well at the track and field meet at East Wilkes Thursday.

“Brittany Brown had a great meet with a personal record in 100 hurdles,” Starmount Coach Emily Curtis said in an email. “She is the only freshman girl participating in the conference meet.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing my 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams compete at conference,” Curtis said. “The 4x2 team ran at the state meet last year and all of the girls have returned for this season.”

Trey Bryant has struggled with injuries all season, Curtis said, but came back for a “huge personal best” in discus.

“Dalton Vestal, a senior, has been working diligently on his 300 hurdle time,” she said. “He reached regional qualifying [Thursday]. It was an important race for him to solidify his trip to regionals again this year.”

Vestal won the race with a time of 43.25.

“Many team leaders emerged yesterday to set a strong tone for the others,” Curtis said. “Josh Houser had a good day throwing (winning the discus and the shot put). Ken Kelly ran well in his events. Samantha Welborn (who also won the discus and the shot put) stepped up to run the fourth leg of the 4x1, bringing the win for that race.

“Also, Erin York, a senior, threw a personal best on every throw in shot put yesterday.”

Starmount was at the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference track and field meet scheduled to be held Tuesday at West Wilkes.

“The girls 4x2 was really good,” Forbush Coach Stephanie Beuter said. “Kasey Bates broke her own (school) record in the 400.”

Bates finished second, behind Elkin’s Shakai Ward, with at time of 1:01.24.

The girls 4x400-meter relay dropped 12 seconds off their best time and Sierra Winters dropped 49 seconds of her 3,200-meters time, Beuter said. Winters completed the race in 13 minutes, 14 seconds.

Alec Faircloth and Noah Sisk both broke five minutes in the 1,600 meters with their fastest times of the season. The boys 4x800-meter relay took 20 seconds off their time, while the girls took seven seconds off their 4x800 time.

Yasmin Ocampom, while dropping two seconds off her 800 time and running a 2:47, won the 800 meters.

Dylan Andrade ran a 50.81 to win the 400 meters.

“Sarah Hayden in the mile and 800 she dropped tons of time today,” Stephanie Beuter added. “All my kids did well today.”

Forbush, a member of the Western Piedmont Conference, has their conference meet Friday at South Stokes.

Ashe County, East Wilkes, Elkin, Forbush, and Starmount competed at the meet.
