ELKIN — It was not quite the day Starmount golfers were looking for Monday at Cedarbrook Country Club.
With the 1A Midwest Regionals being held and berths in the state championships on the line, Starmount’s Nick Gunnell was left on the outside looking in, while teammate Brady Hunter struggled to an 89.
Gunnell finished 10th overall with a 77, but he was one stroke off the score needed to qualify. The top three from a team that didn’t qualify as a team for state would move on as an individual. Instead, Union Academy’s Matthew Schneider (75), Gray Stone Day’s Dray Smith (76), and Mount Airy’s Bailey Bouma (76) earned the berths.
Gunnell, a junior, qualified for states as a sophomore.
Elkin shot 344 as a team — 11 strokes off the number it needed to make to qualify as a team. Bishop McGuinness, paced by Tanner Owen and Kevin Sowinski with 70 and by four in the top five, totalled 286 for the best team score Monday. It was followed by East Surry at 326 and Alleghany at 333.
Senior Josiah Blevins shot a 78 — good for 12th overall — to pace Elkin.
