WINSTON-SALEM — After three consecutive Mountain Valley Athletic Conference titles, Forbush golf coach Matt Pruitt and his Falcons moved into the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference this season.
They would play well enough to earn one of three conference berths in the 2A regionals at Country Club of Salisbury Tuesday, but well behind conference champion South Stokes.
With his team out on the course at Reynolds Park April 29, Pruitt knew it was a good day for his team — comfortably in second place — to play with little pressure. “They’ve only played 18 holes a few times this season,” Pruitt said.
Logan Lineberry, who posted the third-best totals in the conference this season, paced Forbush a Reynolds Park with 36-39-75. Wesley Brown, the conference’s fourth best, shot a 38-40-78. Carson Matthews (41-41-83), Schuyler Eldridge (43-44-87), Carson Snyder (43-45-88), and Micah Cranfill (47-43-90) also figured in the scoring.
South Stokes finished the regular season, including the conference tournament, with a stroke total of 1240. Forbush was next at 1282. The real drama at Reynolds was West Stokes making up a six-stroke deficit in 18 holes to edge North Surry for the third and final conference berth.
The Falcons needed to play 18 holes Tuesday to advance to next week’s state championship at Pinehurst.
“We’re a young team,” Pruitt said. “We’re solid, but we’re young.”
The Falcons feature one senior, one junior, two sophomores, and three freshman who regularly competed to represent Forbush in the top six at meets this season.
