I Support My Community will host a free agility clinic for eight Monday nights beginning June 9 at the Elkin Municipal Recreation Complex. Youth under the age of 10 are welcome between 5 and 5:45 p.m., while those 10 and older are welcome between 6 and 8 p.m.

Participants will report to the open field behind the baseball field at the complex. Farando Best and Elkin assistant football coach Dennis Stokes will be on hand to guide those who attend. Stokes said the clinic will include a focus on hand-eye coordination and footwork. For more information, contact Best at 734-8978.


Forbush High School, June 9 (pitcher and catchers) and June 11 (infielders and outfielders), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; for rising fourth- through eighth-graders. Rain dates June 10 and 12, respectively.

Cost is $20 per day. Payable day of camp. To register, email Coach Denny Key at denny.key@yadkin.k12.nc.us with your son’s name, school, and upcoming year in school.


Cardinal Basketball Camp at East Wilkes High School, June 16-19, hosted by EWHS basketball coaches Justin Call and Matt Campbell. The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades three through nine. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Cost is $50 and includes a camp T-shirt, prizes, and awards. For more information, contact Campbell or Call at EWHS at 651-7200. Registration forms can be picked up at EWHS or filled out the first day of camp.


Ken Abrams, the head men’s basketball coach at Elkin High School, is hosting a basic fundamental basketball camp for rising sixth- through eighth-grade boys at EHS, June 10-12, from 8 a.m to 12 p.m.

The cost is $40 per child. The camp will consist of ball handling skills, passing, shooting, and transition basketball.

Yadkin Valley Basketball Academy at Starmount High School, June 9 and 10. Camp times run from 8:30 to 10: 30 a.m. for rising second- through sixth-graders; and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for rising seventh- through 12th-graders.

Cost of the camp is $40. The camp will focus on ball-handling, passing, shooting, footwork, defense, speed, and agility. Starmount coaches Rocky Horton, Isaac Rose, Ralph King, and Steve Brown, and current Starmount players will be there to help.

Elkin assistant football coach Dennis Stokes, along with other high school and volunteer youth coaches, will be running a fundamentals and skills camp for rising first- through eighth-graders July 7 through 10; from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cost is $50 per player and includes a t-shirt. There will be door prizes provided by the Carolina Panthers and Cook’s Sporting Goods.

Registration can be done at any time at the Elkin Recreation Center. All proceeds from the camp benefit the Elkin High School football program.

Summer day camp

Elkin Recreation Center. Activities include nature hikes, swimming, weekly movie trips, and educational sessions.

Summer swimming lessons are available through the Elkin Recreation and Parks Department.

Day and evening sessions are available for children 3-5 and 6-12 years old. Registration is available at the Elkin Recreation Center.


Group tennis lessons for ages 6-12 are being offered at the Elkin Recreation and Parks Department. Lessons taught by local instructors Jack Jernigan and Steve Mackie. This program runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with sessions beginning on June 10 and June 24.


The Starmount Volleyball Clinic at Starmount High School, June 9-11 from 5 to 8 p.m. for seventh- through 12th-graders interested in learning the game of volleyball or wanting to perfect their skills.

Cost is $40 per camper. The clinic is open to all Coach Jon Symons and Coach Taylor Vestal will run the clinic. The clinic will work on the following skills: ball control, setting, serving , footwork, hitting, defense, team offense, and team defense.

Gold Medal Summer Training Camp at Elkin High School, June 13-17, conducted by USA Olympian Ken Chertow for ages 6-18.

Camp staff includes Olympians, NCAA and state champions, and coaches from all over the country who are renowned for their knowledge of the sport.
