BOONVILLE — Twenty-two girls, ages 8 to 13, turned out Saturday for tryouts as Starmount High School Coach Sarah Boles looks to put a travel softball team together.
“I’m pleased with the turnout,” Boles said, adding four more prospective players were already playing for other teams.
The program was needed, Boles said, to get younger players playing more softball early on.
“You’ve got to start 8, 9, 10 on up,” Boles said. “Got to start with the mechanics and the fundamentals. They have to keep building on it.”
Boles said she hopes the new teams will play in as many as three or four tournaments this fall.
“The main thing is we need to practice,” Boles said. “Get them on the field. Work on different aspects of the game.
“Next year, depending on how much interest we have, we’ll play spring, summer, and fall.”
Boles said if anyone is interested in getting involved with the program, they can contact her through Starmount High School (468-2891) or by e-mail at email@example.com.
