EAST BEND — Forbush started strong and finished strong, downing Wilkes Central, 3-0, to claim its opening day volleyball match at home Monday.

“In between, we took a mental break,” Forbush Coach Angie Funk said. “Mentally, we just lost focus.”

The Falcons more or less breezed through the first set, 25-13, and led 17-10 in the second set before the loss of focus was apparent. The Eagles got within one at 23-22 before the Falcons pulled it out to win 25-22.

In the third set, Forbush trailed 2-0, 5-3, and 7-5 before rallying behind Jessica Funk’s serve to go up 12-7 on their way to a 25-13 win and a three-set sweep.

Coach Funk wasn’t ready to call the first match a complete success, but there were some things that pleased her. “Some plays were exceptionally good,” she said. “It’s a good starting point.”

Funk said her team played the out-of-system balls well. In particular, she was happy with libero Mallory Choplin. “She did a great job stepping in and setting up the play,” Funk said.

Choplin led the team with 14 digs.

Anna Harris had eight kills, while Jessie Hunter added five. Funk and Alexandria Wingler each had four kills. Sidney Matthews had seven digs. Briana Hinshaw led the team with four serving aces, while Funk and Lexia Wingler each added three. Funk also led the team in assists with 17. Hinshaw had eight assists.

The Falcons, 1-0, are next at East Wilkes Aug. 21. The Eagles fall to 0-1.
