After an hour-long executive session Monday night over personnel issues, the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners thanked Christopher Ong, director of planning and development, for his work on an energy grant.

There was a request for technical assistance to the N.C. Energy Office in February for an energy audit with the Human Resources Building in mind for assistance.

There was then a strategic energy plan developed for four county buildings, including the Human Resources Building, Planning and Permits, the courthouse and the agricultural extension building.

“A new found of funding to implement the components of this plan opened up this summer, and we have submitted a grant application to the N.C. Energy Office,” Ong reported.

Ong made a presentation on the CDBG Recovery Scattered Site Emergency Repairs Housing Project, saying in 2009 the county applied for a $100,000 award under that program but did not get it.

The N.C. Department of Commerce Division of Community Assistance has since announced it would use part of its 2010 funds for the N.C. CDBG Economic Recovery Program.

“The DCA has invited all local governments that were not funded in 2009 to reapply this year for the same funding opportunity,” Ong reported. Board members expressed delight over the funds that can be received if the county submits a letter of interest for the funding by Aug. 20.

“On Aug. 31 the DCA will announced which local governments can move forward in resubmitting their full applications by Sept. 30,” Ong reported. A public hearing is required. A public hearing will be held Monday, Sept. 20.

The board discussed a public hearing to consider text amendments regarding residential storage facilities.

The amendments would allow personal storage facilities to be permitted in RA, RR, RL and RG zoning districts on a conditional basis.

The board voted against a proposed $3,129 increase for Yadkin libraries.

There is now a contract between the county and Core Path Solutions for risk management for the Health Department. The county will have a public auction Saturday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. at the YVEDDI Transportation Building at 1413 West Main St.

Items to be sold include vehicles like Crown Victorias, a Jeep Cherokee, a garbage truck, a garden plow, a pop-up camper, two Ford Rangers, a Ford Taurus, a Dodge truck, camping equipment, chairs, dehumidifiers, a desk, doors, a dryer, a fan, file cabinets, keyboards, a large mapping table and more.

The new county motto selection committee includes Board Chairman Chad Wagoner, Phyllis Adams, Bobby Todd, Andrew Mackie and Christopher Ong.

The board has approved a budget amendment transferring $310,000 from the General Fund to create a new line item for the 5D project in the Non-Departmental Fund.

The Veterans Service Office in July had 74 claims filed with 59 faxes reported, 214 written correspondences, 124 office visits, 21 nursing home or hospital or housebound visits and 444 telephone calls, according to Veterans Service Officer Charles M. Knight.

Solid Waste revenues showed an increase of revenues from last fiscal year of $12,037 according to a report from Solid Waste Director Cheri W. Cranfill.
