BOONVILLE - With four games remaining on the regular season schedule, both Starmount squads are looking to stay alive in the crowded Mountain Valley Conference standings.

The Rams, with a 3-9 mark in league play, sit in a tie with Forbush for the third-place spot among 2A clubs. Both teams trail second place Ashe County (5-7) by two games, while Wilkes Central (11-2) has already clinched the top seed.

Starmount can break the tie in a big way when the Falcons come to Boonville Tuesday night. Forbush knocked off its rivals 79-68 in their first meeting on January 4.

The Rams then host 1A Alleghany Friday night looking to complete the season sweep. Starmount topped the Trojans 64-55 in Sparta in January.

The Lady Rams find themselves in a similar position hitting the home stretch.

Starmount, also 3-9 in conference action, trail Forbush (5-7) by two games for the third 2A spot. Ashe County (8-4) and Wilkes Central (7-5) sit in first and second place, respectively.

The Rams can fight back into the race when the Falcons travel to Boonville Tuesday night. Starmount let a late lead slip away in the teams’ first matchup, falling 55-52.

The Lady Rams then welcome Alleghany to town and will be looking for revenge for a January 8 loss to the Trojans.
