The 2013 Annual John Burwell Excellence in EMS Award was presented to Brian Edward Booe, EMT-P of Stokes County, on May 9, at the Hawthorne Inn in Winston-Salem.
In memory of John Burwell of Stokes County, the John Burwell Excellence in EMS Award recognizes those individuals who have made a significant impact in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) within the counties of Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin. Burwell dedicated his life to improving pre-hospital care, the quality of life for our citizens and the overall regional EMS system. Recipients of the John Burwell Award exemplify the same qualities.
Award recipient Booe has more than 20 years of fire and EMS experience and currently serves as a training officer with Stokes County EMS and is a fire fighter with the City of King Fire Department, where he serves as lieutenant.
With his assistance and leadership, the cardiac arrest survival rate that involves EMS pre-hospital care has improved to 35 percent from 5 percent over the last two years. Booe is also responsible for placing more than 80 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the region and establishing the Operation Medicine Drop Program, which placed permanent medicine drop containers in all law enforcement agencies in Stokes County.
